Food for Thought...Did you know that this is National Fruit and Vegetable Month? Well, it is... Fruits and vegetables promote good health. They contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that we need to help protect us from chronic illnesses. Chronic illnesses are those that come on you and NEVER leave--hypertension, diabetes, heart disease to name a few. The only trick to this is, eating the fruits/veggies. There are some people who are unable to eat fresh fruits/vegetables, due to allergies. With the exception of nuts and celery, usually the allergenic protein that causes the reaction is destroyed once the food is cooked. So fresh fruit and veggies may not be for everyone. Here are a few suggestions for you to help you on your road to eating MORE fruits and veggies...
- Once a week try a fruit or vegetable that you have never had before. Check out the web to find the best way to prepare and eat it.
- Clean and store fresh veggies in small (snack-size) plastic bags so you can have them ready for a quick snack.
- Try adding Veggies to your pizza instead of sausage or pepperoni...The pizza will taste great with the addition of green peppers, onions, zucchini, broccolli...
- Try leaving fruits out on your counter in a bowl.... If you see the fruit out, maybe you will grab and snack on that first... Remember, out of sight, means out of mind.
- Add fruit to plain yogurt for flavor. That way you can eliminate the sugar infused yogurt products. Save those few calories for something else you want to eat.
